Updated NBM roadmap confirms go-live of mFRR energy activation market by Q1 2025

Based on detailed analyses done this summer, the NBM program confirms a Nordic go-live of the mFRR energy activation market by Q1 2025.  

Go-live of mFRR EAM by Q1'25, will enable 15-minute market time units 

As NBM announced earlier this summer, an automated mFRR energy activation market is seen as the only viable solution to enable the transition to 15-minute day-ahead and intra-day markets (see previous news update).  Based on detailed analyses done this summer, the NBM program now confirms our commitment to have mFRR EAM implemented in time for the transition to 15-minute market time units in Q1 2025. The time plan going forward involves a low degree of contingency, and we will maintain our dedicated focus to mitigate any risk involved. 

MARI accession in 2026 

Based on the current insights and understanding of the work still to be done after the mFRR EAM go-live in Q1 2025, we expect accession to MARI (the European platform for mFRR exchange) in 2026. 

We will continuously fine-tune the timeline,  based on experience gathered and lessons learned from the transition to the automated balancing process (mFRR EAM). 

Complete Nordic PICASSO accession in 2026 

A full Nordic accession to PICASSO (the European platform for aFRR exchange) is also planned for 2026. However, Finland and Denmark are working on step-by-step connections in line with the legal deadlines, in Q2 2024.  

Nordic mFRR capacity market by 2024 at the earliest 

Earlier this year, the Nordic TSOs had to withdraw the proposed method for a Nordic mFRR capacity market. The NBM program are still determining how to update the Nordic method, making the timeline for the establishment of a Nordic market uncertain. We expect to publish an update to the go-live date in Q4 this year.
